The Clue was “Like Ptolemy’s model, elevating earth in vain (10)”.

The Answer was “EGOCENTRIC”.  Quite a few people put in “GEOCENTRIC” and it seems to apparently fit as well, but if you parse it correctly, you would see that only “EGOCENTRIC” actually fits.

Here, you need to start with a word that describes “Like Ptolemy’s model”, which is “GEOCENTRIC:”. “Elevating” is an indicator that means “to lift”. Although we have not explicitly indicated that this is a “Down” clue, for a seasoned solver, this indicator would only apply to a “Down clue” since in an “Across” clue – the instructions to move letters won’t be “up” or “down” but will be  “left” or “right”.   The letter to be elevated is E (abbreviation for “Earth”). Once you move the first “E” in Geocentric, up – you get EGOCENTRIC. This matches with the definition “Vain”. “In” is the connector between the wordplay and the definition.

Sorry Sureshkumar AS, Mukundala Balasubramanyam, Chitkala, Raghavan S V, Raju Umamaheswar, Gautham (although played it safe suggesting both could be correct – but annotation is incorrect too), Arjun Mukerjee, Ranjani Srikanth and Santosh Iyer. Now, it should be obvious that if you start with “Egocentric” and then elevate or move the “E” up, you won’t end with “Geocentric” and hence, it cannot be annotated correctly.

Once again, well done to each of you who not only solved it but also annotated it correctly in our blog post. Now, Can you solve THIS clue?

  1. IS THAT SO.
&Lit with AS TO ITS (-trut)H *, doubtful as anagrind
I don’t remember this from gridfest like the other two I answered. Are these alternate clues which you didn’t use ?

  2. Lovely clue, and kicking myself for not cracking it. I have a query – since the def is “vain”, Does fodder “in” def work as a construct? “In” seems to indicate something contained in “vain”.

    1. Many setters do use Wordplay In Definition and use it bidirectionally though traditionally, some others only use Definition In wordplay.

Ultimately it’s a matter of preference and I have seen some setters studiously avoid it as well.
