Song-Geetham Quiz – Wrap up

The idea for the Song-Geetham Quiz was seeded by a casual conversation between Ramki and I. Since Bahrain was having an extra long weekend due to the Eid break, we decided to conduct it on the 16th May. The quiz was conducted by myself (Sowmya Ramkumar) and Ramki Krishnan and we were supported by Sethuraman Yegnanarayanan and Ramkumar Narayanaswamy.

The preliminary round was conducted in Zoom on the evening of 15th May 2021. The questions were displayed on slides in the Zoom call and answers had to be filled into the form in the blog link.

The blog link was given to participants half an hour in advance but it was password protected and they had to crack the answer to the question “Name of the Hindi movie starring Kamal Hassan reprising the role played by Robin Williams in Mrs Doubtfire” to login.

There were 20 questions for the Prelims and they were a representative sample of the finals set. 27 teams had registered to participate. Four dropped out due to unexpected last minute cancellations and we were left with the 23 teams below.

The prelims were closely contested and 6 finalists were selected based on the teams that scored the highest (based on correctness and accuracy of answers) and speed of submission. Affter the preliminaries, this was the  ranking of the finalists..

The teams that narrowly missed a spot in the finals were Distant Socializing, Enjoy Enjaami, Dynamic Trio, Moulis and Bandish Bandits. The finals were conducted on 16th evening and it was held in three rounds. The first round was “Alaap” and it was a round of direct questions.

After the Alaap round, we had an elaborate round called “Ragam – Thanam – Pallavi” in which participants were asked 30 challenging questions. This round followed an Infinite bounce format and participants who were willing to take some risks could play to maximize their strengths.

The final round was called “Tharikida Thillana”. In this round each team had to try and crack 6 anagrams of names of Music directors, Lyricists and singers in both Hindi and Tamil.

At the end of the three challenging rounds and 2 hours of high quality quizzing, here are the results..

Winners – Chennai Cheetahs

2nd Place – Saadaga Paravaigal

We’ve been avid movie fans since childhood and have also been enthusiastic quizzers since we can remember. Our goal is to have a lot of fun also while learning a few new things. Though we’ve been associated with each other for a long time, we’ve never played as a team together, so that was a first for us. And finally you guyz rocked with the questions and the way you conducted it.

3rd Place – Ragam

Gayathri is a homemaker from Bahrain. Books, Food, Films and Quizzing are her interests. She dabbles in poetry and few of them have been publised in an anthology. She is also an ardent cricket fan, unabashedly loves IPL and supports CSK

I’m a Mumbaikar and a Cost & Management Accountant (CMA) by profession. Had worked for The Bombay Dyeing & Mfg. Company Ltd. while in Mumbai. Bahrain is my home away from home since the past 15 years. Currently, I am a homemaker, enjoying being a mother to 2 teenage daughters along with toastmastering, baking and reading

4th Place – Blockbusters

We came to know about the quiz from a friend and also on FB. Instantly we decided to go form a team and participate as we love quizzing. We also like participating in the GOSH quiz conducted by Sowmya regularly as it is a wonderful brain teaser. My team members and I thoroughly enjoyed participating. The quiz was conducted very nicely in a zoom meeting. The organisers saw to it that the number of audio and video questions were well balanced. The 2nd round where we could choose the question number in a mixed bag of puzzles, anagrams, audio, video gave us an adrenaline rush. All in all, the quiz was just awesome and we are waiting for participating in many more quizzes from the organisers… Sowmya and Ramki

5th Place – Ilaiya Nila

Srikanth is a Chartered Accountant and is a career investment banker. He is an avid reader and loves playing and watching cricket in his spare time. He loves to travel and passionately blogs about his travel experiences. Buni Srikanth is a home maker and a mother of two kids with varied interests including Carnatic classical music and Bharatanatyam. She is also an entrepreneur who runs a Tanjore painting business in the name of Shree Tanjore creations. She is also a story teller and founder of the story telling group Kathakaar Sangam.

Krishnan is a Bahrain based IT professional and management graduate. A performing Carnatic musician, he has given concerts in Bahrain, Sharjah, Dubai and many states in India.

6th Place – Sillunu Oru Kaatru

Long time friends Jeyanthi, Priya and Vasanthi love riddles, puzzles and movie based quizzes which helped them stay close and connected during the lockdown. They strongly believe that friends who play together, stay together
